5Keys Light Duty Trailer is designed for individuals whose job requires hauling a trailer or operating a straight truck.
Combining eLearning with four hours of Behind the Wheel coaching, this course teaches drivers how to safely operate articulated rigs in close quarters and on the open road.
This course begins with a virtual refresher of The Smith5Keys® – the foundation of all our 5Keys training – and an interactive eLearning session that addresses trailering principles and methods including journey planning, safe loading and unloading of equipment, and preventing trailer sway.
The majority of the course is a four-hour behind the wheel session spent operating articulated vehicles in instructor-led, hands-on driving. Certified Smith System instructors lead up to 12 drivers in practices and exercises to learn safe hauling methods.
Working with an expert coach, drivers also practice advanced vehicle control techniques, safe driving skills, and truck and trailer inspections.
At completion, trainees receive a Smith System certificate and performance evaluation, a Driver’s Study Guide, recommendations for further developing safe driving habits, and access to our on-line portal to keep a record of completed courses and if applicable at your organization, access to the Smith System eLearning library.
With our On-Site courses, our certified instructors travel to your location, using your facilities and vehicles. This class can include up to 12 trainees. In addition to providing a parking lot of at least 400 feet by 600 feet, you will also need to provide a training vehicle and trailer, one for every two students.
