Harold L. Smith founded Smith System in 1952, inspired by his World War II service where he saw more lives lost to traffic crashes than in combat.

Determined to change that, he developed The Smith5Keys® to Safe Driving—practical, easy-to-remember principles focused on space, visibility, and time.

First adopted by Detroit’s early driving schools and Ford Motor Company, The Smith5Keys have since become the foundation of fleet safety programs worldwide, including at more than half of the Fortune 500.
