The Executive Team

Smith System's® executive management team has more than two hundred years of combined experience in transportation, fleet safety, military and government operations, international (members having lived abroad in five of the seven continents,) and financial disciplines.  Jim Smith, our most senior employee, has been with Smith System over 30 years and was trained by our founder, Harold L. Smith.

Anthony (Tony) S. Douglas

President and CEO

Joined Smith System: April 2003
Experience: Over the past 30 years Mr. Douglas has served in various managerial positions with FedEx and ServiceMaster, he was Vice President of Safety for the nation's largest tank truck carrier, President and COO of a large national flatbed carrier, and Principal of The Douglas Group transportation consultants.
Education & Certifications: Memphis State University, FedEx Leadership Institute, Stanford University Executive Education, and Certified Smith System Instructor.

James A. Smith

Senior Vice President of Training

Joined Smith System: December 1981
Experience: Held numerous positions and progressive responsibilities since 1981, handling training, sales, customer service, consulting, operations, and administrative duties. Originally trained by company founder and namesake, Harold L. Smith. Responsible for managing and leading the Training Department growth from a handful to the over 100 national and worldwide educators training for Smith System today. Appointed Senior VP of Training in April of 2006. Prior to Smith System, operated as a Professional truck driver.
Education & Certifications: Certified Loss Control Representative, Certified Smith System Instructor

Frank Powers

Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Joined Smith System: April 2003
Experience: Twenty nine years experience in the transportation industry. Twenty one years aviation industry operations and sales management experience with major airlines. Ten years experience in ground transportation management. US Air Force Veteran.
Education & Certifications: Degree in Business Management and Administration, Certified Smith System Instructor

Douglas M. Boughton

Senior Vice President of Finance and CFO

Joined Smith System: December 2009
Experience: Twenty five years accounting, finance and operating experience in small to mid-sized companies. Specializing in improving operations, stream lining and automating back-office procedures and creating business information and reporting systems.
Education & Certifications: BBA in Accounting and Business Information Systems Texas A&M University, Certified Public Accountant.

Peggy Johnson

Vice President of Finance and Human Resources

Joined Smith System: January 2004
Experience: 35 years experience in accounting and accounting management, working in public accounting, non-pofit and for profit organizations.
Education & Certifications: MBA University of Texas at Arlington, BSBA Midwestern State University, Certified Public Accountant.

Walter Cole

Vice President of Training (East)

Joined Smith System: April 1987
Experience: Responsible for all Trainers in the Eastern half of the US since 2003. Held several positions within Smith since 1987 including responsibilities in sales, operations management, purchasing, warehouse operations, special projects and training. More than 20 years instructing Smith System training in the UK, Mexico and Canada. Formerly was a General Manager in the grocery industry.
Education & Certifications: East Tennessee University - Business, Certified Smith System Instructor

Paul Nielsen

Vice President of Training (West)

Joined Smith System: January 1996
Experience: Responsible for all international Trainers and those in the Western half of the US since 2003. Over 15 years of experience instructing Smith System throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Teaching experience in public and private schools and the city cultural centers in Anjo and Okazaki, Japan. Ten years employment Disneyland. Lived abroad and has intermediate fluency in Japanese.
Education & Certifications: UCLA - Degree in Political Science and International Relations, Certified Smith System Instructor
